Larissa Goldston Gallery is pleased to present Up North, the gallery’s first solo exhibition of paintings by Breehan James. The exhibition will be on view from October 22 – December 17, 2011. There will be an opening reception for the artist on October 22 from 6 to 8 pm. The paintings included in the exhibition are records of James’ adventures in the wilderness and her connection to the landscapes of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. The works depict dense forests and bucolic streams. Often sparsely populated, the paradigm of man’s occupation of nature is subverted by the preponderance of meticulously painted leaves and rippling water that engulf the figures. Influenced by the hunting scenes of Courbet and early nineteenth-century Nordic landscape painting, several of the works in the exhibition document the artist’s family during deer hunting season. James investigates the practice by alluding to the importance of family tradition, food awareness/responsibility, as well as personal reflection and relationship to the natural world. The paintings describe specific places revisited over decades with family and friends. Eschewing photographic references, James relies on highly detailed plein air drawings and her innate sense of these spaces to render specific species of trees and dazzling light effects with keenly observed specificity. James holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and an MFA from Yale University School of Art. This is her first solo exhibition in New York. Larissa Goldston Gallery is located at 530 W 25th Street, 3rd floor. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11am – 6pm.
